Ade, a young boy of mixed heritage, has been through a lot in his young life; far too much. Ade was removed from his home after he was found on a disused railway in his mother’s care when she was drunk. After being removed he went to live with his step-father where he was abused, both physically and psychologically. Ade was removed and placed in foster care while Coram searched for a loving home for him.
In addition to the emotional turmoil Ade had been through, he was also diagnosed with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Finding a loving home for a child who is likely to have difficulties as they grow up can be hard.
Maria, a single woman, also of mixed heritage, had already been through the selection process of adoption when she met Ade. Initially drawn to him by the resemblance to her niece, her feelings strengthened the longer they spent together.
Maria was not deterred by his history and the long term implications of FASD, however she did think very carefully about whether she had the resources to support Ade for the rest of his life. . The local authority visited Maria, and were very impressed by her and agreed that she was the right person to be Ade’s mum. Maria spent 10 days getting to know Ade in his foster carer’s home, and then Maria welcomed Ade into her home and they became a family.

Ade needed a lot of attention to begin with- he wasn’t able to play on his own. After an assessment of his needs, Coram provided Creative Therapy support. This helps trouble young children like Ade find their voice so they can begin to speak out about their negative emotions and feelings.
With Marias help, Ade’s confidence and self-esteem have grown in leaps and bounds. He even started to make friends with boys and girls of his own age.
The attachment Ade has developed towards Maria has grown steadily. It’s taken a little while, but he now identifies their flat as his home and Maria as his mother. Knowing what he was like before, it’s wonderful to see him give Maria spontaneous physical affection.
