Coram Life Education
In September 2009, Coram and the charity Life Education, now called Coram Life Education announced their amalgamation. The innovative partnership unites the UK’s first children’s charity with the UK’s largest children’s health education charity to help nearly 1 million children per year nationwide live healthier lives and avoid misuse of alcohol and drugs.
Coram has a heritage in the field of children’s health stretching back nearly three centuries. It was created to rescue children lost and abandoned on the streets of London who at the time faced a death rate of up to 95%, to save their lives and give them a future.
Today Coram works with over 10,000 children and young people and their families per year. Coram helps children born into challenging circumstances who face the risk of loss, and gives them the chance of love in a family, a childhood and a future. Coram’s driving aim is to create better chances for children.
Coram Life Education uses interactive mobile classrooms to teach positive health messages to primary school children to help them make smart choices as young people. Topics covered include: how the body works, the importance of healthy diet and exercise, safe use of medicines, the risks of tobacco, alcohol and non-prescription drugs and emotional well-being, including bullying. These messages contribute to the existing Personal, Social and Health Education curriculum (PSHE).
Age-appropriate sessions are delivered by highly trained Educators, who are usually fully qualified teachers and who teach in a fun and interactive manner using music, sound, light effects and interactive technology.
Coram Life Education licenses 36 operational groups reaching 4,000 school communities. Programmes cover most of England, parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland and some overseas locations.
Coram Life Education – Trustee Recruitment
Coram Life Education is a leading children’s health education charity focused on reducing smoking, drugs and alcohol misuse.
With 130 teachers working in 4,000 schools, Coram Life Education already provides exciting learning experiences to almost 1 million children. A series of eight age sensitive programmes are provided to children throughout their primary school years, when evidence shows we really can make a difference to their long term health choices. Educational resources and training programmes are developed at a national level for use by 36 local operating groups located throughout most of the United Kingdom.
Following its amalgamation with Coram, the charity now plans to increase its impact by not only enhancing its work in schools, but also developing new programmes aimed at helping parents fulfil their responsibilities to help their children grow up safely.
The national organisation is now seeking trustees with experience at a strategic and policy making level, in the education and health sectors, who are able to commit to voluntary monthly participation, to guide this development.
In its 270th year, Coram has a distinguished past and an exciting future, addressing the fundamental needs of children and young people and planning a redevelopment of its exceptional three acre campus in central London. This is home to a range of family support services and will provide the national centre for Coram Life Education.
