Adopters share magic moments leading up to meeting their children

Published: Tuesday 8th July 2014

In Coram’s latest short film about adoption, three parents tell of the days and weeks before their first meeting with their adopted children

Paul and Graham who have two adopted sons describe seeing pictures and a DVD of their children. Said Graham: “The first thing we saw was their profile, their characters really came across strongly. The youngest one was doing Power Rangers! We watched this short DVD of the boys and that sort of sealed the deal didn’t it?”

Coram’s social workers carefully consider the needs of children awaiting adoption and match them with parents who they think will complement them. Enquiries are welcome from people of all backgrounds and walks of life, enabling us to make matches that work for parent and child.

Susan, who adopted her daughter through Coram said she also felt a connection to her the first time she saw her picture:

In all that I had imagined, it was exactly the child that I wanted. I just fell in love with her straight away.

Susan goes on to reflect on the date of their first meeting: “The first day that I met her was on Valentine’s Day, how good is that? That’s something that you would never be able to forget!”

WATCH OUR SHORT TWO-MINUTE FILM TO HEAR PARENTS WHO ADOPTED THROUGH CORAM TALK ABOUT THE MOMENT THEY MET THEIR ADOPTIVE CHILDREN AND WHAT THAT FELT LIKE.

Many adopters will feel nervous and excited before meeting their children. Their social worker will be on hand to offer support and guidance at this time and into the settling in period when their child comes to visit and eventually live.

Because Coram offers lifelong post-adoption support, adopters can be assured that they can access continued advice and guidance if and when it is required.

Susan reflects that she was anxious before her very first meeting with her daughter, but that these emotions quickly subsided: “On the way in the car I remember feeling really nervous… As soon as the door opened it was just like, yeah, we’re joined together now.”

Coram offers specialist training to all adopters both one-on-one and with other families going through the same process. It has over 40 years’ experience as a Voluntary Adoption Agency and is nationally recognised for operating a quality service.

This video is part of a series of eight films to be added to Coram’s website, aimed at encouraging more prospective adopters to come forward.
