Coram responds to government announcement on adoption

Coram has welcomed the government’s announcement today of its continued work to improve the adoption process across the country. Coram is among experts working with the Government on improving the system and reducing delays.
Carol Homden, Chief Executive of Coram, said: “We welcome the government’s continued efforts to improve the adoption process, and its support of professionals who are committed to doing their best for our most vulnerable children.
“We must work together to ensure adoption standards are consistent across the country so that those children who have already had a difficult start in life can be found a loving, stable family without delay.”
Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Adoption announced the plans on Thursday 23 February, attended by Carol Homden and Coram Head of Adoption Jeanne Kaniuk.
He said: “We need a system that works for all children, regardless of where they live. A system which is quick, effective and robust.
“When a child can't stay with their birth family, then the longer they wait for a permanent adoptive place, the more damage they will suffer - and the harder it will be to form a bond with a new family.
“That is why it is so important to tackle delay throughout the system. We need to speed up care decisions, and work with local authorities to ensure they speed up their processes too.”
The government voiced support for social workers, concerns about variations across different regions, and the need for a system that works for all children, regardless of where they live.
