Susan, a single mother was the first person to adopt through Harrow- Coram partnership.
A swift process for a single adoptive mum
“I’ve gone through this process as a single parent, I thought there would be a stigma attached to me as a single parent adoption.
Going through it and doing my research I was put in touch with Coram, and going along and having an interview with them, there was no problem with having a single adopter.
I went through the process and it only took about 9 months. We (my adopted daughter and I) were the first ones to go through the process with Coram and Harrow.”
Coram provides ongoing and comprehensive support
“That’s one of the things Coram do, there’s a preparation group, so you first go along and find out about what kinds of children go through the system and what needs they might have, and then they match you with what kind of criteria you are looking for.
They look through everything, their process is excellent, they had people come in to talk about the process and how they got their child, they answered everything.”
Why the system should change
“Our home is lovely, my daughter, she’s wonderful and she fits into our family wonderfully. I hope that all this will help others to come through the same way, because it is a long process and I have heard some horrifying stories about how takes too long and I think this is unnecessary.”
