Research into outcomes for adopted children

Miriam Steele (Anna Freud Centre), Jill Hodges (Institute of Child Health) and Jeanne Kaniuk (Coram): A longitudinal study of the development of attachments between older adopted children who have suffered adversity and their adoptive parents.  Funded primarily by the Headley Trust and the Glasshouse Trust (both part of the Sainsbury’s Family Trusts).     

Ongoing research funded by the Big Lottery, between Miriam Steele (Anna Freud Centre), Jill Hodges (Institute of Child Health) and Jeanne Kaniuk (Coram).

Needs assessment for Children’s Centres

Needs mapping for Haringey Children’s Centres – Report for Bounds Green Children’s Centre
An assessment of needs conducted in 2009, found:

  • Parents needed better information about services offered,
  • There was a need for a broader range of services and cheaper services closer to home.

Approaches to safeguarding for black and minority ethnic children

Study of strategies to meet the safeguarding needs of black and minority ethnic children in Tower Hamlets. Commissioned by Tower Hamlets Local Safeguarding Children Board.

Coram pilot schemes evaluated by academic researchers

Harrow Adoption service

Coram provides the local authority’s adoption service in partnership with Harrow, a new form of commissioning. Report for the Department for Children, Schools and Families by Dr Julie Selwyn of the Hadley Centre, University of Bristol
A 2009 review of the three year partnership between Harrow council’s adoption services and Coram revealed:

  • Reduced time needed to place children with their adopted families
  • Increased confidence amongst Harrow staff responsible for making decisions
  • It took time for benefits of the partnership to show

Family Drug and Alcohol Court

Major study of this experimental service - interim report from Prof Judith Harwin of Brunel University September 2009. Funded by Nuffield Foundation.
