concurrent planning
Coram’s concurrent planning project places babies and children under two years with carers while plans for their future are being decided by the courts. The carers are approved as foster carers and adopters.
If the Courts decide that the birth parents have shown that they can meet the child's needs, the babies will return to their care. Their concurrent carers will have the satisfaction of knowing that they gave these children love and security when they needed it, and helped them to settle back into their own families. However, a substantial proportion of these young children are unlikely to return home. Those who cannot return home will remain with their concurrent planning carers and can go on to be adopted by them.
The great advantage for the children concerned is that it will speed up planning for their lives. Some children will be able to return to birth families, but if they can't, it will prevent them having to suffer moves of placement and delay. They will be able to settle and bond with their new parents from a very early stage.
We are looking for loving, emotionally resourceful families who can put the needs of very young children first and who can respect and work with the children's birth families. We need families of all ethnic backgrounds. We are happy to consider single parents as well as couples.
Coram provides the following support:
- Special training - two days of specialist workshops in addition to the general adoption preparation groups.
- Intensive support and back up to the families who care for these children throughout the process.
- Fostering allowances for the carers during the court assessment.
- Parenting assessments for the courts.
- Supervised contact and parenting skills training for the children’s birth families.
- Further support to carers should they go on to adopt.
