Simon Callow live as ‘Dickens’
Charles Dickens grew up near the Foundling Hospital and, like Handel, helped raise both money and profile for the charity. His famous works such as Oliver Twist and Little Dorrit feature foundling characters, and the novels highlight the plight many children faced in the 19th Century. In 1853, in Household Words magazine, Dickens published a feature titled Received, a Blank Child, which described life in the Foundling Hospital. It is this article which inspires Simon’s performance.
