Screening of The Kid with live music

Screening of The Kid with live music

Join us for a very special evening at the iconic Wilton's Music Hall to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid with a unique screening and live music.

We are delighted that the Chaplin Foundation has graciously extended the opportunity for Coram to host the only UK screening (one of just three in Europe), of Charlie Chaplin’s masterpiece, The Kid. This will be accompanied with live music by award winner Dutch composer and pianist Maud Nilessen in the film’s centenary year.

The Kid relates an eternal story, captures a personal experience and is one of the first cinematic representations of child poverty and the story of care. Chaplin was born in London and spent time in several workhouses. The streets of London in the late 19th Century were harsh and unrelenting. The only option for a mother fallen on hard times was the Charity Hospital, the first caption of the film being “The Woman whose sin was motherhood” and to leave a note with a child on the street, in this case saying “Please love and care for this orphan child”.

Sadly, child poverty in Britain has been growing in the last decade and has been exacerbated in the course due to recent events. 100 years following Chaplin’s expose, we are nowhere near eradicating this injustice and Coram continues to be at the forefront of efforts to alleviate it.

The screenings will take place at Wilton's Music Hall, the oldest surviving music hall in the world, on Wednesday 7 July 2021 at 5pm and 8.30pm. This setting is an authentic reflection of the sort of venues in which Chaplin would have performed in Britain, prior to his emergence as one of the first globally recognised stars of stage and screen.

This will be our first live event since our Handel Birthday Concert in February 2020 and we have a limited number of people which we can attend each screening, a maximum of 100 per session; we would love you to join us on this unique occasion. As always, all proceeds from this event will help support our work.
