Help children who have been left behind
"Reading is more important than any other thing"
This is what Jacob told his teacher, but he really struggled to read. He’d fallen behind and this was having a negative impact on his schoolwork, his confidence, and even his friendships with classmates - some of whom teased him and called him names.
Due to the pandemic, an estimated 200,000 children will start secondary school unable to adequately read or write. 11 is such a formative age that if you fall behind you may never catch up and the effects can last a lifetime. It not only limits your education and career opportunities, but it crushes confidence and self-esteem.
Many children like Jacob are struggling to catch up and falling further behind.
At Coram, our specialist group of children’s charities provides children with the love and opportunity they need to thrive. Our dedicated reading support and education charities, Coram Beanstalk and Coram Life Education, have worked with teachers, parents, and carers to improve the educational chances of children like Jacob while supporting their resilience and wellbeing.
We want more children to receive the one-to-one support from our volunteer readers that they desperately need and that the school system is struggling to provide.
You can help us repair the damage to children’s futures and prevent thousands more children from falling behind.
