Young people identified the key issues that they felt were important to include. Through these discussions, several key themes emerged that provided the foundation for the toolkit: identity, conversations with teachers and friends, making decisions about contacting birth parents, and challenging common stereotypes about adoption.
Their toolkit reflects the lived experiences of our ambassadors while also providing space for adoptees to use it as a tool for reflection, guidance, and support. We recognised that much of the existing information about adoption is often centred on the perspectives of parents. However, it is equally important to ensure that the voices and experiences of young people are heard and understood.
This toolkit is the result of young people sharing their experiences to help other adoptees feel seen, supported, and empowered.
