Coram event to share learning on supporting children at risk of not achieving good level of development

  • 12 March 2026

Local authorities, partners and stakeholders, educators, early years professionals and childminders will be on the Coram campus on Friday 20th March to share learning from the Moving the Box programme, a Coram Hempsall’s initiative designed to support early years educators in identifying and supporting children at risk of not achieving a Good Level of Development (GLD).

Working in partnership across six local authority areas –  Durham, Sandwell, East Sussex, Cumberland, Sefton, and Westmorland and Furness – the programme has been developing a strategic approach to building confidence and potential among early years teachers working with children at risk of not achieving a GLD to support their future attainment.

Under the leadership of early education expert Jan Dubiel, Moving the Box helps make informed decisions about what to teach and how to teach it, with a clear focus on equity and impact. The ultimate goal is to increase the number of children achieving GLD and to maximise the benefits of the Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP).

This work aligns closely with the Government’s Opportunity Mission, which aims to close the opportunity gap by ensuring a record proportion of children start school ready to learn. The target of raising GLD achievement from 67.7% to 75% by 2028 equates to an additional 40,000 to 45,000 children reaching developmental milestones each year.

As we approach the first anniversary of delivering Moving the Box, the event will share findings, experiences, and case studies from across the participating local authorities, working in 160 settings with some 1,500 pupils. These insights highlight the programme’s inputs, impacts, and the barriers encountered and overcome.

James Hempsall, managing director, Coram Hempsall’s, said: “We hope these reflections will inform and inspire and inform others’ approaches, whether they are a local authority, group provider, school, childminder, or sector organisation. We are looking to make an even bigger difference in early years outcomes in more areas throughout 2026 and through to 2028 and shall be inviting new areas to consider joining the programme so we can all Move the Box together.”

The Moving the Box conference is taking place on Friday 20 March 2025 from 10:00 – 16:00 at Coram, 41 Brunswick Square London, WC1N 1AZ. You can click here to book: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/conference-how-moving-the-box-can-raise-levels-of-gld-tickets-1827823151249?aff=oddtdtcreator
