Dr John Simmonds, OBE (Director of Policy, Research and Development) discusses how he has come to understand permanence and what it involves at a Coram-i seminar. Powerful research and examples are presented to highlight how this concept can be utilised to inform practice and decision-making when considering the needs of looked after children.

Coram-i has been working in partnership with Kent County Council since 2012, helping it to improve its adoption service from an inadequate Ofsted judgement (2011) to a Good judgement (2017).

The challenge of achieving permanence for children in care

This seminar brought together researchers, in conjunction with representatives from the voluntary and public sector, to explore what permanence means to them and the aligned challenges in achieving this for vulnerable children. Speakers used their knowledge and experience to give perspectives on a wide range of issues, including Special Guardianship Orders, calculating the cost of permanence and local authority partnerships.
